Description
First flown in December 1964, the Lockheed SR-71 spy plane (nicknamed "Blackbird") was the most dramatic aircraft ever to fly the skies.
Designed to be the ultimate "spy-in-the-sky" it is still probably the fastest and highest flying jet plane ever built and was impossible to catch before it was retired from service in 1990.
Flying at such high speeds and altitude, the pilots of the SR-71 had to wear protective flight suits similar to what the astronauts used.
